Dr. Alice B. Tanner June 4, 1939 to January 25, 2013 Dr. Alice Barbieri Tanner, born in Seneca Falls, New York, passed away at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, CA surrounded by her family on January 25, 2013 at 1:50 p.m. after a long battle with lung cancer and respiratory diseases. Alice graduated from Mynderse Academy in Seneca Falls, NY. She attended Geneseo State Teachers College where she received her bachelor's degree in library science. She went on to receive her master's in library science at Albany State University and earned her doctorate in human behavior with an emphasis on education from United States International University, San Diego. She married Richard F. Tanner in New York on December 3, 1963. They had two sons - Mark and Ricky. She was supportive of her husband and his naval career and lived all over the world. While living in Japan, she was a third grade teacher for the Department of Defense. In 1968, they moved to San Diego, CA. Alice taught at San Jose University, San Diego State University, and was the principal of Rancho Elementary School and Bancroft Elementary. She was the principal of La Mesa Elementary until her retirement in 1996. She served on the Board of the National Women's Hall of Fame from 1998-2001. Alice dedicated her retirement years to furthering the care of others through the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. At the time of her passing, she was the Chaplain for the Department of California Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars. In years past, she held the distinguished chairs of District and Auxiliary President. Alice loved traveling. She visited five continents, and her favorite place was Hong Kong. She spent the last months of her life traveling and visiting her family. The greatest love of her life was her family, specifically her granddaughter Wendy and her grandson Ricky. Alice is survived by her husband, LCDR Richard F. Tanner, USN Retired, her son Mark and his wife, Lisa, her grandchildren Wendy and Ricky and her sisters Patricia Goit, Frances T. Barbieri, and Deborah R. Barbieri. She is preceded by her son Ricky Tanner (1984), father Anthony Barbieri, mother Frances Barbieri, and sister Marilyn Rhodes. Alice's internment will be alongside her son Ricky at the family plot at El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley. The service for Dr. Alice B. Tanner will be January 31, 2013 at El Camino Memorial - Sorrento Valley at 2 p.m. Following the internment, a celebration of her life will be held at the VFW Post #3787, located at 4370 Twain Ave, San Diego, CA at 4 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Seneca Falls Historical Society, 55 Cayuga St., Seneca Falls, NY 13148 or to St. Patrick's Church, c/o St. Patrick's Church office, 25 Center St., Waterloo, NY 13165 A Memorial Service will be at the convenience of the family.
