Gary A. Millerd, 84, lifelong resident of Waterloo, passed peacefully in the morning on Thursday, October 16th, 2025 at Huntington Living Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 23rd, at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 35 Center St., Waterloo. Interment with full military honors will follow at New York State Veterans Cemetery – Finger Lakes. Donations in memory may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at StJude.org.

Gary was born in Waterloo, son of the late Lester and Mary (Craver) Millerd. He graduated from Waterloo High School, Class of 1959, where he developed his lifelong love of sports. He was united in marriage with Barbara (Ritter) Millerd on April 19th, 1965, at St. Stephen’s Church in Geneva, with the couple celebrating 60 years of marriage this year. The same year he graduated from high school, Gary joined the US Army, serving proudly for 2 years, before returning home and taking employment with Prudential Insurance in Auburn. What started as a job turned into a career in the insurance field, with Gary retiring after more than 30 years.

From a young age, Gary loved all sports. In his younger years, he played basketball and tennis and was able to curate and perfect his love of golf. At one point he coached basketball at St. Mary’s school, and after retiring from insurance, he worked at Silver Creek Golf Course in the pro shop for another 18 years. Whether it was working or playing, Gary could be found at Silver Creek most days and is where he scored 2 of his 3 lifetime holes-in-one. Gary’s children have fond memories of playing golf with their dad on Father’s Day; something that started as a one-time event and is now a favorite annual tradition.

In addition to his time golfing, Gary was also a member of the American Legion Warren-VanRiper Post 435 in Waterloo and was always down for a game of euchre. In addition, most mornings you would find him at Bagels & Cakes in Geneva, having breakfast with his friends, discussing anything and everything, but mostly talking about golf.

Gary is survived by his beloved bride, Barbara; sons, Gary (Debbie Mason) and William “Bill” (Kristen) Millerd; daughter, Lisa (Kurt) Chapin; granddaughters, Madison Chapin, Sophia Tedone, Jennifer Mason, Michelle (Adrian) Rivera; great-grandchildren, Reese and Rowen Rivera; Cruz Mason; sister, Margaret “Meg” (Bill) Urwin; brothers-in-law, Robert H. (Nanci) Ritter and Andrew Dellefave. Gary was predeceased by his parents; sister, Molly Dellefave; brother, Thomas Millerd.
