Mary M. (Tanner) Scesny

Mary M. Scesny, 78, of Waterloo, passed in the comfort of her own home surrounded by the love of her family, on Friday, May 9th, 2025. In keeping with Mary’s wishes, all services are private, held at the convenience of her family.

Mary was born in Auburn, NY, the daughter of the late Frederick and Margaret (Angus) Tanner. She attended local schools and went on to further her education at Auburn International Beauty School. Diving headfirst into the salon and cosmetology field, Mary not only owned and operated several salons in the area, but she also taught others in the field as well. She operated the Beauty Boutique for 45 years; first in Seneca Falls, and later in Waterloo.

In addition to the salon, Mary also did in home care, was a waitress, and other odd jobs that allowed her to care for and interact with people. Mary was known for putting others and their needs before her own. Mary lived a selfless life, making sure her family was well cared for and she always had an open-door policy if someone needed a place to stay. Though she was kind and selfless, she was also very strong and was able to see the good in every situation.

In April of 1965, Mary met Lawrence J. Scesny Sr., and by June of that same year, the couple were married. Lawrence passed in October of 2024 after a union of more than 59 years.

When Mary wasn’t working or caring for others, she loved crafting. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and making clocks. Those closest to her will remember her crafting abilities and while she did sell a lot of her crafts, many were also given to family and close friends.

Mary is survived by her sons, Lawrence "Bunk" (Jenny) Jr. and David P.; daughters, Gina Marie (James) Duffy and Sam (Scott) Saunders; eleven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Stanley J. Tanner and Earl (Annette) Phillips; sister-in-law, Sophie (Steve) Babcock of NC. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Frederick and Margaret; husband, Lawrence; and her sister, Kristi Phillips.
