Richard "Abe" Meyers, 84, of Romulus, died peacefully with his family by his side, on Monday, August 1st, 2022 at his home that he built on Cayuga Lake. He was born in Seneca Falls, NY, the son of the late Leonard and Donna (Dutcher) Meyers and was married to the late Albina (Vergamini) Meyers for 58 years. Abe was predeceased by both of his parents, and his wife. At Abe's request, there will be no public services. Donations can be made to either Friends of Section 5 Wrestling and sent to: Jim Sauberan, 474 West Avenue, Brockport, NY 14420 or Rochester Regional Health Hospice Care, 330 Monroe Ave., Suite 400, Rochester, NY 14607.
A man of few words, his actions spoke volumes. He lived his life following the poem, "The Man in the Glass" by Peter Dale Wimbrow. The words were the cornerstone of his philosophy that he shared with his children, athletes and students. The poems message is about self-reflection and being true to oneself.
He graduated from Mynderse Academy in 1956 followed by SUNY Cortland with a Master's Degree in Education. For over 30 years Abe was a teacher and coach. He taught Science, coached football, baseball, and helped with the track program for Seneca Falls Schools. Wrestling was his favorite sport; he produced many winning athletes and teams coaching at Mynderse Academy and at Waterloo High School. Abe was honored by his many inductions into the Section 5 Wrestling, Waterloo Central and Mynderse Academy Halls of Fame for both coaching as well as individual and team athletic accomplishments. Many of his former athletes and students attribute their successes in life to the values bestowed upon them either in the classroom or the wrestling room.
Abe was an avid outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting and telling a good story of "The one that got away," with family and friends. He was a devoted friend and played a major role in many of their lives. For years he visited friends and relatives at nursing homes where he would bring home cooked food to many of whom he had no connection with but befriended during his visits.
He is survived by his daughter, Jill (Tom) Sandroni; son, Richard (Becky) Meyers; grandchildren, John (Breanna) Cifaratta, Sabrena Cifaratta, Anna, Richie, Nathan and Benjamin Meyers; great-granddaughter, Stella Rose; brother, Gene (Shirley)Meyers and their children, Carol, Cindy and Rusty; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Abe's family would like to extend a very special Thank You to the Newark Palliative Hospice Team and especially his nurses, Shannon Picchi and Lori Smith, social worker, Jill Hubbard, as well as his aide, Lori Pugliese, for their excellent care of their dad during his final days.
