Scott was born in Uniontown, PA, son of the late Zane and Emma Jean (McKnight) Reed. He graduated from Warsaw High School in Warsaw, NY in 1966. Scott went on to further his education at Alfred University where he received his Masters in Education. It was in 1971 that Scott relocated to Waterloo when he took a position at Waterloo High School teaching history. Over the years, Scott advanced his career to becoming a Guidance Counselor at Waterloo High; a position he held for many years. Not only was he an educator but also a Coach. In 1977/78, Scott coached the Waterloo JV Basketball team to a Section V title. He also coached the Football team and started the Varsity Golf Program at Waterloo High; a program that still exists today. No matter what capacity Scott came to be involved in a student's life, he always wanted to see his students succeed. It didn't matter if success came through academics or sports, he truly wanted his students to find success and happiness in life no matter what path they chose. After a career of more than 30 years, Scott retired in 2002 and remained a part-time guidance consultant with the school until 2005. After his retirement, Scott continued his assistance with area families by working part time as a Funeral Assistant at Doran Funeral Home.
Scott's main interest in life was his family. When he was younger, he loved spending time with his children and being involved in their activities, and later in life it was his grandchildren who he adored the most. He was also an avid golfer, a sport he enjoyed his whole life. Scott made many longtime friends through the game of golf.
Scott is survived by his wife of over 46 years, Patricia; daughter, Courtney (Justin) Young; son, Sean (Courtney) Reed; 3 beloved grandchildren, Ethan and Raegan Young, MacKenzie Reed; brother, Zane (Patricia) Reed; brother-in-law, Thomas Coughlin; sisters-in-law, Carole (Robert) Kingston, Luann Coughlin, Christine (Gabriel) Cohn; as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.
